Reading these numbers

Grains per gallon (gpg)
Hardness is calcium and magnesium. Under 3 gpg is soft; 3 to 7 moderately hard; 7 to 10 hard; above 10 very hard. To convert from mg/L (the unit the reports use) divide by 17.1.
Lime softening at the plant
Miami-Dade treats its water with lime, which removes part of the hardness before it reaches you. It is why Miami water is milder than Broward's. It does not remove all of it, which is why your glass shower door still spots.
Chloramine versus chlorine
Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia. It lasts longer in the pipes, which is why utilities use it, and it does not gas off if you leave a pitcher on the counter. Standard carbon filters remove chlorine well and chloramine poorly. Catalytic carbon is treated specifically to break it down.
If you're on a well
West Davie, Plantation Acres and parts of Southwest Ranches are on private wells. No utility report covers you. Iron, hydrogen sulfide and hardness vary house to house, so we send a lab test before quoting a fixed price.
